Garnets are a close-knit family of silicate minerals with many common characteristics. They all form crystals in the isometric system, usually with 12 or 24 sides. Chemically, garnets contain the elements calcium, magnesium, iron and aluminum, combined with silicon and oxygen. Other, less common metals may also occur. Please see our individual garnet retail mineral specimens for specific details.
