| Septerye formed between 50 to 70 million years ago. Variable in color, texture and origin, septerye consists mainly of the minerals calcite, aragonite and limestone. Both plant and animal life, directly and indirectly, contribute to making this intriguing mineral. The decomposition of ammonites and dead sea life, along with million-year-old mud cracks and a unique and complex natural balance, contributes to the very intriguing appearance of septerye. Septerye is often referred to as "Septarian", which somes from the Latin word "septem" (meaning seven) because the sediment (or mud) that formed around the calcite had a tendency to crack in seven points in every direction, creating the distinctive pattern this mineral exhibits. Please see our individual septerye retail mineral specimens for specific details. Note: We also carry septerye retail mineral specimen spheres listed separately under "Spheres." |
