| As a result of hot, silica-bearing waters, buried wood is gradually replaced by agate or opal which permeates the wood in a process called petrifaction. This forms petrified, or fossilized, wood. The replacement of the wood may be so minute and complete that even the details of cellular structure are preserved. Please see individual retail mineral specimens for specific details. |
