| Barite is a sulfate of barium, a silvery metal. It is classified as a nonmetallic because it is rarely a source of the metal, but is widely used otherwise. Barite occurs in many ways. Occasionally, it can be found as large transparent or translucent crystals; sometimes as crystalline vein fillings, with fluorite or calcite, or with metallic ores. Small rose-shaped concretions are found in the sands of Oklahoma in the U.S. Barite is a fairly soft (H 2.5 to 3.5) but heavy (Sp. Gr. 4.5) mineral. Metaphysically, barite balances the yin-yang and male/female. It is especially useful for those who are out of balance between body and mind, or for those who have difficulty dealing with gender-based issues. It simultaneously works on upper and lower chakras, bringing feelings of comfort to the solar plexus and enabling the user to release conflicts that may polarize them to one side or another. Please see our individual barite retail mineral specimens for specifics pertaining to each specimen. |
